About Charlie

Muswell Hill guitar teacher Charlie has been playing, performing and writing music from a young age. Charlie begun his journey learning classical piano at the age of three. By the age of eleven he picked up the guitar, with guitarists such as Joe Pass and Jimi Hendrix being a great source of inspiration.

At the age of 12, Charlie begun studying guitar at The Purcell School for Young Musicians in Bushey (Hertfordshire) with a full scholarship. He then enrolled in the Junior Department at the world famous Royal Academy of Music in Marylebone, London. Whilst at both these institutions Charlie completed his GCSE’s and A-levels, performing alongside some of the best musicians in the UK including Chris Montague, Kit Downes, Brandon Allen, Stan Sulzmann and Laurence Cottle to name but a few.

During this time Charlie was also a semi-finalist in the BBC Young Composer and Young Jazz Musician of the Year competitions respectively.

After studying at Purcell and JRAM, Charlie began to continue his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, with a scholarship and direct entry into year two of the undergrad course. During his first few years at Guildhall Charlie’s compositions and arrangements resulted in performances at the Barbican, Ronnie Scott’s, 606 Club, 100 Club, Vortex Jazz Club and E1. An All About Jazz review of a performance at Milton Court Concert Hall with Yazz Ahmed and the Guildhall School Big Band said: “foremost among several promising soloists in the Orchestra was electric guitarist Charlie Heywood, who has a delightfully fluid style”. (Peter May).

Since graduating Charlie has continued to work on his own compositions and projects, performing live at festivals such as Love Supreme Festival and South by Southwest, recording new music and teaching guitar lessons both privately and in schools across the capital.
