At Make More Music, our aim is to pair students with teachers who both have extensive industry experience as well as teaching experience. One such teacher, Lauric Mackintosh, has written his first drumming essentials bible, The Mackintosh Method.

The book distils years of hands‑on teaching experience and practical research into a structured, friendly guide that feels as close to Lauric’s real lessons as you can get on the page. Even better: right now you can get a free downloadable PDF, giving you immediate access to a sample of The Mackintosh Method. It’s linked at the bottom of this story – check it out below!

Developed based on years of real-life research and one-to-one teaching, The Mackintosh Method takes you from picking up the sticks for the very first time to having the skills to play the songs you love with real confidence.

What’s in the book?

The Mackintosh Method starts with the absolute basics. Beginner drummers will find everything you need to build a strong foundation, including what you’ll need to get started, how to sit at the kit, how to hold your sticks and even how to strike the drums. There’s even a handy diagram to show you each component of the kit.

If you’re nervous about starting to read drum notation, all your questions are answered in an easy-to-understand format that will give you confidence to unlock more complex beats as you progress.

We talk a lot at Make More Music about how important practice is – it’s the backbone of progress for any player! In The Mackintosh Method you’ll also be given the tips and tricks you’ll need to unlock the most from your practice sessions, which will make you feel like you’re making meaningful strides in your playing when you sit at the kit.

Progress, playing, and creating your own fills

Once you have your core skills, the book levels up to give you basic rhythms, beats and fills, introducing you to the different sounds you’ll find across the kit (including the ride and crash cymbals). You’ll learn to play other parts of the kit, and broaden your styles even further.

As you work through The Mackintosh Method, Lauric introduces you to more complex beats, fills, dynamics and more, all contributing towards building your skillset and giving you playing confidence. By the end of the book you’ll be playing in 6/8 and 12/8 time, playing rhythms in triplets, and mastering more complex patterns like the shuffle, the reggae one-drop, and the motown beat.

With Lauric’s guidance, you’ll also be able to create your own fills and play your own fills to music – taking the skills you’ve learned beyond the book and applying them to create something totally new.

Real music, real examples

A standout feature of The Mackintosh Method is its connection to real music. Throughout the book, Lauric includes song suggestions that match each new skill, so you can immediately apply what you’ve learned to tracks you know and love.

Downloadable MP3 demonstrations accompany the exercises, giving you a reliable reference for how each pattern should sound. This blend of structured learning and musical application keeps motivation high and makes your practice feel purposeful.

Is this book good for taking grade exams?

The Mackintosh Method covers material found in the Initial, Grade 1, and Grade 2 syllabuses across major exam boards, making it a valuable resource whether you’re working toward graded exams or simply learning for enjoyment

Styles such as rock, pop, blues, and reggae are woven throughout, giving beginners a broad musical foundation and a taste of the versatility the drum kit offers.
