Should all kids learn music at school? Well, that’s the question Channel 5 posed to us last week. And what better way to answer that question than sending expert drum teacher Lucy Yates over to their studios on Friday 5 June to discuss that very question.

Lucy went live on air with Vanessa Feltz – along with guests Calum Best and Paula Rhone-Adreien – to discuss the benefits when kids learn music at school, and even taught them a thing or two about playing the bongos!

Should all kids learn music in school?

The debate whether kids learn music at school on Channel 5 came off the back of new research that suggests learning an instrument can help prevent so-called “brain rot” in young people who struggle with addition to social media. “Brain rot” is not quite the term we’d use but it’s great for debate.

With music being quietly stripped away from a lot of state schools across the UK, the discussion is more relevant than ever. So if your kids learn music in school they’re perhaps part of a smaller group of pupils than you might think.

Speaking with Vanessa Feltz, Lucy said “it’s a shame there isn’t access to music universally. Music’s a really joyful way to connect to the world and connect with each other”.

It’s about what we can get from the process of learning, and what it can contribute to our mental and physical health.

When Vanessa Feltz asked Lucy if anyone can learn an instrument, Lucy said: “absolutely, yes! It’s all about learn behaviour and it’s not necessarily about being good at something. It’s about what we can get from the process of learning, and what it can contribute to our mental and physical health. It’s such a regulating activity, particularly for people who are neurodivergent”.

But the discussion isn’t just about children. There are huge benefits to learning an instrument as an adult too. Lucy said, “there are also some studies that should that learning an instrument can help prevent dementia later in life”.
